The North Carolina Council for the Social Studies Needs You!

In February 2020, members of the North Carolina Council for the Social Studies will elect: OPEN POSITIONS to guide the work of NCCSS. We need extraordinary social studies educators like you to help lead this professional organization. The typical commitment is 4-5 Saturday meetings per year and board members are expected to purchase a membership for the National Council for the Social Studies (approximately $75). Travel expenses are reimbursed for meetings and are set at the state rate. The NCCSS will cover your NCCSS Conference registration fees if your school or organization is unable to. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved with our organization on the state level, here’s your chance!

What are the office responsibilities?

Board of Directors (3-year term; 3 open seats) – Guide the direction of NCCSS and be a part of the decision-making process, Attend regular meetings as scheduled, Participate in committees, Attend and assist with state NCCSS Conference in February or March.

Secretary ( 3-year term; 1 seat) active conduit for communication between the board and members, by giving proper notice of any meetings and timely distribution of materials such as agendas and meeting minutes. Attend regular meetings as scheduled and participate in committees. Assist and attend with state NCCSS Conference in February or March.

Vice President (4-year term; 1 open seat)- The VP will spend one year serving in the capacity before moving up to the position of President-Elect for one-year, then President, and finally Past President. The Vice President of the North Carolina Council for the Social Studies shall: (a) Serve as the Program Director of their assigned conference year for the annual North Carolina Social Studies Conference. (b) Serve in a mentee capacity to shadow the President in the Program Director’s role. 

What are the requirements to hold office?

1. Be a member of both NCCSS and NCSS and maintain membership throughout the term of office.
2. Attend the NCCSS state conference in February; candidates must be present to be confirmed.
